A sediment device is a temporary measure for sedimentation control. It usually consists of a sock filled with a medium that will filter soil out of runoff. They are mostly used in small drainage areas to detain sediment. These devices are most effective where there is overland flow (runoff that flows over the surface of the ground as a thin, even layer) or in minor swales or drainage ways. They prevent sediment from entering receiving waters. They are also used to catch windblown sediment.
