CASE STUDY A storm water channel was constructed to the rear of the project to convey water into a basin. High storm water volume and velocity required the installation of a Turf Reinforcement Mat (TRM). During the period from May 6, 2012 through June 6, 2012, 9.32 inches of rainfall were recorded in the Womelsdorf area, representing 22.5% of the average annual recorded rainfall. SITUATION ConradWeiserWest Elementary School Womelsdorf,PA The designer specified an organic-matrix based Turf Reinforcement Mat consisting of 70% straw and 30% coconut fiber with triple nets of UV stabilized polypropylene nets, rather than a“hard-armoring”rock solution. East Coast Erosion Blankets ECSC-3 Turf Reinforcement Mat was chosen as the channel liner. ECSC-3 is an organic-based product with a 497% tested improvement in encouraging seed germination and plant growth. SOLUTION The plants quickly established and provided a strong composite channel liner that enhanced the natural ability of vegetation to permanently protect the channel from soil erosion. Despite various intense rainfall events, and the area receiving 22.5% of the annual rainfall during a 30-day period, the vegetation did not experience fatigue or damage. The vegetated channel also provided pollutant removal capabilities, not observed in rock-lined channels.
