CASE STUDY Kusile is a coal-fired power station in the Delmas municipal area of the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. The new facility would consist of six generating units producing approximately 4,800 megawatts. The project required extensive excavation and precision accuracy, to facilitate the power station and associated access road development. With a nearby population based and bordering sensitive wetlands on two sides, attention to detail and extreme product reliability were a must. SITUATION Kusile Coal-Fired Power Plant MpumalangaProvince,SouthAfrica The designer implemented a series of measures to satisfy the environmental needs, including: stormwater trenching, removal of alien vegetations, development of a catchment area, and dam construction. Inthisregion,topsoilpreservationandwaterqualitywereoftheutmostimportance. Erosion control and revegetation became a major priority. East Coast Erosion Control’s ECC-2 product was selected for this very unique and important role. SOLUTION The ECC-2 product worked flawlessly to secure the valued top soil, weathered heavy rains and maintained the integrity of the design until vegetation took root.
